Gelato Gal offers authentic taste
of Italy at new Rehoboth shop

Gelato Gal owner Amanda Randall traveled across the ocean to Italy to learn how to bring true Italian gelato to the people of Rehoboth Beach.

Randall opened her shop in early June, after returning from a gelato culinary institute in Italy. She had spent a lot of time in the country in past years and missed the creamy treat when she returned home to the states.

The gelato in Randall’s shop is made entirely from scratch. If she cannot find ingredients or flavors in the United States, she sends for them to be shipped from Italy.

After attending classes to make gelato, Randall has a new appreciation for the hard work that is involved. “You don’t just make gelato,” she explained. “You coax and implore it. It’s a lot of experimenting to get it just right.”

Randall loves when customers come in with a flavor challenge. She has made vanilla cardamom after a suggestion, and she also experimented with different child-friendly candy bar flavors. She also likes working with alcohol paste in gelato, but she said those types are challenging to freeze.

Randall believes her shop complements the many gourmet food choices in the Rehoboth area. “You can’t get a bad meal around here,” she said. “My gelato really is a perfect fit to the area.”

Randall has a lot of faith in her gelato, and she trusts that anyone who tries it will fall in love. “No one should be discouraged if they get gelato from somewhere and it isn’t true gelato,” she said. “It really is the holy grail of foods.”
